Commissioned by the Remote Control project, the fifteenth in our monthly remote-control briefing series from Open Briefing has been published. The briefings cover developments in five key areas or remote warfare: special forces, private military and security companies, unmanned vehicles and autonomous weapon systems, cyber warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. This month’s key stories include the deployment of foreign special operations forces in Syria, a Russian private military company fighting alongside Spetsnaz special forces in Syria, US officials exploring scenarios for Islamic State ‘dirty bomb’ attacks using drones, US Cyber Command operations against Islamic State becoming an  important force multiplier, and studies find mass surveillance is having a negative impact on democracy and informed debate.
